Another stride forward for Mount Airy's revitalization

Forty new businesses have arrived over the past three-and-a-half years, creating 175 jobs. Property values have soared an average of 150 percent along the avenue, which has also seen $35 million in new capital investment, including an Acme Market grocery store, a nursing education center, a medical facility and Winston Commons, a $4 million retail/condo complex.
Opened last March, Soles, a ladies shoe store, is among the businesses flourishing in the area seemingly poised for greater growth. The business improvement district will play an important role, said Derek Green, who co-owns the store with his wife Sheila Mitchell-Green and four others. "I think it will continue the renaissance on Germantown Avenue and continue to allow us to bring a diverse set of businesses and stores to Germantown Avenue by allowing us to make improvements in a collective way," Green said.
